Its probably just as quick to use the rational roots test on the quartic x^4 + x^3 -2x^2 + 2x + 4 = 0. You only have to try +- 1 2 and 4. Its fairly obvious only the negative candidates can work and you quickly see -1 and -2 work. Synthetix division does the rest.
